There are currently three imaging technologies for displays: liquid crystal (LCD), light emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diode (OLED). What defines them and how they differ, here in brief. and we discuss ips lcd vs amoled.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

OLED in turn stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes. Translated into German, this means organic light emitting diode display.

- There are various organic semiconductor layers between the two electrodes

# What does IPS LCD VS AMOLED or OLED technology actually mean? – AMOLED vs LCD
Let’s start with LCD technology .
LCD stands for “Liquid Crystal Display”. This means that the display on the screen is generated by liquid crystals or crystals that float in a liquid.
These crystals are, however, illuminated from behind. Therefore, this species theoretically eats a little more electricity.
Depending on the position of the crystals, the light is let through differently and we see what we see on the display.
That about the LC display. But what does OLED or AMOLED mean?
With OLED, however, the individual pixels are illuminated by light-emitting diodes.
With the type AMOLED, which are also mainly installed in the Xiaomi and other smartphones, the so-called active matrix is used to control the pixels. Here each pixel can be controlled individually and the AMOLED technology does not require any background lighting, as these are self-illuminating.
Incidentally, OLED technology is also used in the foldable displays.
The black areas can be switched off here thanks to the option just mentioned of controlling the pixels individually and therefore black is really black here.
But one after anonther. I would like to tell you now what the advantages and disadvantages of the two technologies are.
# OLED technology – what are the advantages and disadvantages?
All the advantages of OLED displays result from the self-illuminating image points / pixels. Because no backlight is required, the OLED screen is thinner and lighter than a comparable screen with LCD technology. With OLED devices, a significantly higher contrast and thus a better image depth is achieved. This is because the brightness of every single pixel can be adjusted, while LCD screens can only be darkened in certain areas.
Another advantage is the low energy consumption. Even if LCD displays are already very energy efficient, OLED displays still require less power. OLED technology creates prospects for the future, with OLEDs, for example, a transparent television set is conceivable in the future.
# LCD displays – advantages and disadvantages
LCD displays are widespread and initially offer a number of advantages, such as strong colors and fast response times, compact design and a long service life. However, the service life of the smartphone or its display is limited by the aging of the backlight.
On the other hand, LCD displays also have decisive disadvantages, the most critical of which is that they are almost unreadable when the backlight is switched off. Strong ambient light can also make the content displayed very difficult to read due to reflection on the display. This shortcoming can be compensated for by increasing the background lighting at the expense of the cell phone battery , but only to a certain extent. Color, brightness and contrast vary depending on the viewing angle of the device. The lower this viewing angle dependency, the higher the power consumption. In addition, the distribution of the background lighting on the display is often not quite even.
# What new technologies or functions do the two types of display offer us?
For example, it is currently only possible to install a fingerprint scanner under the display on AMOLED displays. With LCD, the scanner in the power button or on the back of the smartphone is standard.
LCDs also usually have the notification LED that we all know. An always-on display is the alternative with the AMOLED display and technically also makes more sense, since the areas that are not required simply remain switched off and the whole thing is much more energy-saving than it would be with the LCD.
Therefore, you cannot activate an Always On Display in the settings of the Mi 10T Pro’s IPS panel.
In addition, the OLED displays are thinner and more flexible than LC displays, which is why the foldable or rollable displays can also be installed in the smartphones.
But as mentioned at the beginning, most of those who don’t have enough money left over have to opt for AMOLED with a lower frame rate or LCD with a higher frame rate of ips lcd vs amoled
What is this frame rate anyway
# What does the refresh rate say?
First of all, the Hz number of the sampling rate is also an important point in terms of the response speed of the display. But I would like to leave that aside today.
But now to the frame rate. The frequency or Hz number indicates how often the image is updated on the screen.
By 2020, 60Hz was the standard. Now at the end of 2020 we know that we already had smartphones with 144Hz. For example the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro.
The higher the Hz number, the more comfortable and fluid it is to operate the smartphone. The difference to 60Hz is especially noticeable when scrolling. Because the browser or the system looks much smoother, more fluid or more supple when scrolling back and forth.
Nevertheless, the perception of the different Hz numbers is probably different from person to person. It may be that you don’t even notice it or that you only notice the difference from 120 Hz.
There are currently smartphones with 60, 90, 120 and 144Hz on the market.
The high frequency is also an advantage when gaming. So if you like to play mobile games and they also support the high frequency, then you should rather use the smartphone with the higher frame rate. The Hz number really offers added value. Therefore, one should pay attention to it before buying.
# A question from the beholder
Which display technology is best depends on your preferences. If you want to save, you can simply use the cheap smartphone with a correspondingly less good display; if you want to save energy, you will find the right technology under OLED displays. And as far as the quality is concerned – you will hardly see any major differences.
