High-pixel mobile phones are Samsung’s long-standing goal! Following the launch of 48MP, 64MP, and 108MP camera sensors, in April of this year,

Samsung’s sensor business team leader and executive vice president Yongin Park issued a statement saying that Samsung will launch a 600MP image sensor beyond the human eye. (The resolution of the human eye is said to be about 576 megapixels.)

Now, this matter has progressed again! On December 7, according to foreign media reports, Samsung’s plan to develop a 600MP smartphone camera sensor may eventually be realized.

Previously, Park explained in his article that increasing the number of megapixels is not as easy as it sounds. Crowding too many pixels on the sensor will require an increase in size, while reducing the size of a single pixel will darken the image.

The 600MP sensor Samsung seems to be using has 0.8µm pixels and measures 1 / 0.57 inches. The sensor will occupy 12% of the smartphone’s area and will also cause a 22mm protrusion.

To this end, Samsung will once again use the reliable ISOCELL pixel binning technology to ensure that the camera bumps are not too large.

In fact, a higher number of megapixels does not necessarily guarantee better picture quality. This may be the reason why Apple and Google do not participate in the megapixel war.

However, Samsung believes that high-resolution sensors may be used outside of smartphone photography, such as detecting potentially life-threatening diseases and improving quality control in industries such as agriculture.

As for the functions of ordinary smartphone users, the  camera 600MP sensor seems to be able to shoot 4K and 8K videos with greater zoom capabilities.

Although the samsung camera 600MP sensor is expected to be realized, the real commercialization may take some time.
